Masseto is a legendary Super Tuscan that is made from 100% from Merlot. It is made by the same producer of Ornellaia, the famed Bordeaux blend from Bolgheri. Until recently, Masseto was vinified and aged at Ornellaia. In 2019, Masseto opened its own winery.
The Masseto estate was founded by Lodovico Antinori in 1981. At the time Merlot was largely unknown in the region. Acclaimed oenologist Andre Tchelistcheff identified the grey and blue clay of the Masseto hill as ideal for planting Merlot.
It has been a success since its first release in 1986, and received its first perfect 100 point score for the 2001 vintage. Only 30,000 bottles a year are produced, and it can be difficult to find, even with retail prices of $800+.
Masseto makes a second wine called Massetino, which debuted in 2019 with the release of the 2017 vintage. The distribution of Massetino is limited and sells for $300+.
In 2012, Masseto converted to 100% organic farming.
Masseto was first released in 1984 to immediate acclaim. Today, production totals around 35,000 bottles a year.
